The Broom or Besom

The Witches Broom or "Besom" is symbolic of cleansing and of fertility. They are used to sweep the circle (or any area) free of unwanted energies, so that the desired energy can fill the space. Traditionally besoms are made with a phallus-like knob beneath the straws. The custom of "jumping the broom" at weddings and handfastings was to ensure many children for the new couple.
