HeiroglyphsHieroglyphs The word hieroglyph is from the Greek, meaning "sacred writing." This form of symbolic scribing began in Egypt somewhere around 2700 BCE as a method for keeping track of the Pharoah's possessions. The ancient Egyptians used some 2000 symbols in their "alphabet." The earliest heiroglyphs were stylized pictoral images, later the Egyptians modified them to represent sounds so that they could spell phonetically.
