My Duties as a Priest*

To seek and find the Dragon, both inside and without **
To entrain with the Dance of Life, and turn the Wheel about ***

To tread light upon the Earth and seek to keep Her whole,
Safe and habitable for all beings, this shall be my goal

To seek to harm none, by my word or deed,
To honor the wise Ancients and follow close their rede

To give my word rarely, and hold to it fast
To look towards the future but learn from the past

Finding in my triumphs the courage to proceed,
Examining misfortunes to find the lesson's seed

To strive to create balance in everything I touch
To know my abilities, good and bad, but not let them be a crutch

To know that life's not black or white, but many shades of grey
That every path is different - there is no One True Way

To look past the obvious and seek into the core
To strive ever toward the stars, toward what makes my heart soar

To know that the greatest strength comes from facing fear
And that your struggles are for naught unless you persevere

To follow my own path, whether broad or over grown
And may my example be a torch from which others may light their own

Yet in keeping my own way, may I not trod the others down
But instead be a force for good on the journey to which they're bound

A shoulder on which to cry, and hand to hold in strength
For those who ask my counsel, they shall have my wit in length

A teacher and a healer, birthing through life's pains
Yet also there to share the joy and congratulate the gains

And yet in my giving, I shall not give till I have none
To give also to myself, else I shall be undone

To give not from emptiness, nor to stave away strife
Instead to give from my boundless joy in the fullness of my life

To spread community and build cooperation
To know that good lies in all, that we are all relation

But those who ask not of me, or if their path is not mine
I will not seek to change them, for they too are Divine

And let me yet be humble, for I've much growing too,
And though I seek to serve and teach, I learn also from you

And through this web of wisdom, one brightest thread I see
To strive for the finest of my self, the best potential me.

*in Draconian tradition, the title "Priest" is not necessarily gender-specific. Women may refer to themselves as "priest" or as "priestess". As for men . . . hey, whatever. Back

** in Draconian tradition the Dragon represents the Universal All. Back
